Six paradoxes in, a shape has set: each one bottomed out not in a tool but in a human choice, made inside a box that someone had already drawn. We have been examining what happens inside the boxes. This one examines the drawing of them. We cut silicon development into rooms, verification here, synthesis there, timing in its own room, physical in the next, because no single mind can hold the whole object at once. The cut was rational. It is also, now that machines run down the corridors between the rooms faster than any human ever walked them, the reason the chip has become hard to see whole. The division that let us finish it is the division that hides it.
The bargain we made with our own limits
Nobody sat down and decided that a chip should be built by seven teams who mostly do not read each other's logs. The division arrived for a reason so plain it is easy to forget it was ever a choice. A modern part contains more distinct concerns than a single mind can hold in one thought. You cannot reason about functional correctness and setup slack and antenna rules and IR drop and reset sequencing in one continuous act of attention. So we did the only thing a bounded person can do with an unbounded problem. We cut it into pieces small enough to be held one at a time.
Design verification became a box. Design-for-test became a box. Synthesis, place and route, static timing, physical signoff, each became a box. And the cut was not arbitrary. Each box was drawn around a concern that a specialist could carry in their head, learn deeply, and defend. That is what made the arrangement work. A person could spend a career inside one of these rooms and become someone the rest of the flow trusted precisely because they never had to think about the other rooms.
But a box is not only a scope of attention. To function as a unit of work, each one had to be given three things, and it is the third that this whole series turns on. It got its own inputs, the artifacts handed in at its door. It got its own metric, the number that says how it is doing. And it got its own definition of done, the condition under which it is permitted to say the word finished and pass its output along. Inputs, a metric, a done. Everything a self-contained unit needs, and nothing that reaches past its own walls.
Read that list again and notice what is not on it. Nowhere in the definition of a box is there a term for the path. No box was given a metric for the trajectory that carried the design from the previous room into this one, or for the trajectory that will carry it out. Each room was made responsible for a state, the condition of the design when it arrives and when it leaves, and no room was made responsible for the journey between states. The division was rational when humans were the only movers, because a human leaving one box still carried, in memory, where the design had come from. The map lived in people. It did not need to live in the flow.
The seam where responsibility is allowed to stop
Between any two boxes there is a hand-off, and the hand-off is a stranger place than it looks. On a schedule it appears as a single clean line, an arrow, a date, a set of files moving from one owner to the next. In the logic of the flow it is something more consequential. It is the point at which one team's green becomes the next team's given.
Watch what that phrase does. When the timing team closes and hands over, their result stops being a claim under examination and becomes a premise the physical team builds upon. The downstream room does not re-open the upstream verdict. It cannot; re-opening every prior box would dissolve the very division that made the work tractable. So it accepts the green as a fact of the world and reasons forward from it. This is not laziness. It is the arrangement operating exactly as designed. The whole point of a clean interface is that you do not have to look behind it.
And that is where a quiet thing happens to responsibility. Each interface is engineered to be a place where one concern ends and another begins, which means it is also, without anyone intending it, a place where inquiry is permitted to stop. The upstream team is responsible for the state they handed over. The downstream team is responsible for what they do with it. Both statements are correct. But the question that spans the seam, the question of whether the design that left one room is the same design, in every consequence, that the next room now believes it received, belongs to neither. It sits in the gap between two definitions of done, and a gap is not something the flow assigns an owner to.
So the seam is not merely a boundary of scope. It is a boundary of accountability, and the two do not have to coincide but the flow makes them coincide. The result is a path made of segments, each with an owner, and joints between the segments with no owner at all. For a long time this cost us very little, because the joints were staffed by memory. A person carried the design across the seam and, carrying it, noticed when something did not add up. The seam had no formal owner, but it had an informal witness, and the witness was enough.
Red, yellow, green
Sit beside a junior engineer at the start of their career and watch what the work looks like from inside a box. There is a dashboard. On it are cells, and the cells are colored. Red is a thing that must be made not-red. Yellow is a thing that is watched. Green is a thing that is finished, and finished things are the ones you are permitted to stop thinking about.
For the person early in the work, and this is not a criticism of them, it is a description of the arrangement they were handed, the colors are not a summary of the work. The colors are the work. The job, as it presents itself day to day, is the conversion of red into green. That is what earns the standup update. That is what closes the ticket. That is what the box was built to produce. The trajectory that carried a cell from red to green, the sequence of decisions and constraints and quiet assumptions that produced the color, is not on the dashboard, because the dashboard is an instrument of the box and the box was never given a term for the path.
This is the true shape of expertise inside a division. You become excellent at your color. You learn every way a cell in your room can go red and every legitimate way to bring it back to green. And precisely because you are excellent at your room, the rooms on either side of you become, correctly and by design, someone else's green to trust. The junior watching the cells is not failing to see the whole path. The whole path was never rendered. It is not that the trajectory is hidden by negligence. It is that no surface in the box was ever built to show it, and a thing with no surface is not something attention can land on.
A column of greens reads as a finished chip. Each green is a state inside a box. The trajectory that joins them has no cell, because no box was built to hold one.
The mover that inherits the map
Now put an agent into one of these rooms and watch what it does, because what it does is not strange at all. It is faithful. It is, in fact, the most faithful occupant the box has ever had.
An agent is given a target, and the target is expressed in the only vocabulary the box possesses. A metric, and a threshold that turns the cell green. Close timing. Reach coverage. Pass the check. It works toward that target with a persistence no person sustains, and it stops when the cell is green, because green was the definition of done it was handed and there was nothing else in the box to want. It has no reason to care about the trajectory that produced the green, and that is not a flaw in the agent. It is a precise reading of the flow. The flow, as written, never asked it to care. The path was never a term in the room, so it is not a term in the agent's objective.
What the agent inherits, then, is our decomposition whole. Every wall we drew for our own cognitive relief, it accepts as the shape of the problem. It optimizes each box in isolation because the boxes were handed to it in isolation, each with its own metric and its own done, each sealed against the next by an interface designed so that nobody has to look behind it. The agent looks exactly as far as the walls allow and not one step further, and it does so brilliantly, at the metric it was given.
And here the arrangement, which held for decades, begins to come apart at the joint. The seams between the boxes were staffed by memory, by a human mover slow enough that the person leaving one room still remembered the last. An agent does not move at that speed and does not carry that memory. It crosses the seam in the time it takes to write a file, and it crosses it having forgotten nothing because it never held anything to forget. The informal witness who used to stand at the joint and notice that something did not add up is not there, and cannot be there, because the pace of the crossing has left human witnessing behind. The agent walks our divisions faster than the hand-offs that used to stitch them together can be renegotiated, and it arrives at the next room carrying a green that no one watched it earn.
"My part is clean"
Here is the cost of a clean interface, stated as plainly as it can be. When no one owns the whole trajectory, every owner along it can say, truthfully, that their part is clean, while the system that the parts compose is wrong. Each statement is defensible on its own terms. The wrongness lives nowhere that a defensible statement can reach it, because it lives in the seam, and the seam was the one place the division declined to assign.
This is not a hypothetical, and it is worth grounding it in something that happened inside our own flow, because it shows the shape without needing a villain. On the cva6 core, our own static-timing engine ran and reported clean. It was correct on every one of the 8,898 checks it performed. Not approximately correct. Correct, check by check, on the entire set of questions it knew to pose. If you were the owner of that box, the cell was green and your statement, my part is clean, was true and would survive any audit of your part.
And an entire class of check did not exist in that box at all. Recovery and removal timing on the asynchronous set and clear pins of the design, 6,685 such checks, were never posed. Not failed. Not waived. Never posed, because they were not among the questions the box was constituted to ask. The full universe of checks the design warranted was 15,583. The engine ran 8,898 of them, correctly, and was silent on the remaining 6,685 in a way that produced no red cell, because a question you never ask cannot come back red. The timing team's green was defensible. It was defensible and the design was, in that dimension, unexamined, and both of those are true at once.
Read this correctly, because the temptation is to read it as a tool that failed, and it is not that. Within its frame the engine was exact. The gap did not live inside the box. It lived in the seam between what the timing model represented and what the design contained, and that seam is precisely a place no single box owned. The timing box owned the checks it ran. Some upstream box owned the constraints and the model. The physical box owned what it built on top of a green it was entitled to treat as given. Every owner was clean. The path from the design that existed to the confidence that shipped ran through a joint that belonged to no one, and the missing class of check fell into exactly that joint. It is a stage-local truth adding up to a whole-path blind spot, and no accusation against any stage can locate it, because every stage is telling the truth.
Every box reports clean and every report is defensible. The dashed joints between them belong to no owner. The whole path can read wrong while no single cell does. The diagram is conceptual; the cva6 figures are from one run.
When the seam becomes a property of the design
Return, for a moment, to why the division was drawn. It was drawn to make progress measurable. A box with its own metric and its own done is a box you can report on, schedule around, and staff with a specialist. The decomposition is the reason the work could be planned at all, and nothing in this article asks us to give that up, because there is nothing to replace it with. A bounded mind still cannot hold the whole chip in one thought. The boxes are not a mistake. They are the condition of the work being possible.
But the same lines that made the work measurable are the lines along which the true path becomes invisible. Every metric is a metric of a state, and the sum of green states is not a green trajectory, in the same way that a row of correct photographs is not a correct film. The division did not merely organize the work. It quietly substituted the visibility of states for the visibility of the path, and for as long as people moved slowly between the states, we did not notice the substitution, because the path lived in the movers.
At machine speed the substitution stops being invisible and starts being consequential. When the mover crossing a seam is fast enough and forgetful enough, the seam is no longer a scheduling convenience that a person happens to bridge. It becomes a property of the design as built, a place where a class of question can be absent with no cell turning red, a joint through which a green can pass without anyone able to say, across the whole path, why it is green. The 6,685 checks that were never posed are not a story about one engine. They are a demonstration of what a seam is when nobody slow is standing in it. The gap was always structurally possible. The slow human was the only thing that used to make it improbable.
Which leaves a job, and it may be the last job the division cannot dissolve. If no owner is assigned the whole trajectory, and if the movers are now too fast and too forgetful to serve as the trajectory's unofficial keepers, then the one act no box can perform for us is the act of refusing a green that cannot be explained across the whole path. Not a green that failed. A green that passed, in every box, and that no one present can account for as a journey rather than a set of states. The tools can produce the color. They cannot supply the account. Someone has to be willing to stand at the end of the corridor and decline the finished-looking result on the ground that its wholeness was never anyone's to certify.
The division that made the work possible is the division that now hides the work from us, and the two cannot be separated, because they are the same set of lines seen from two sides. We drew the boxes to finish the chip, and the boxes are exactly why the finished chip is hard to see whole. That was tolerable when the seams were bridged by people slow enough to remember. It is a standing question now that the movers have outrun the memory the seams relied on.
